A 1940s/50s Miriam Haskell beaded wooden necklace. Haskell was a jewelry designer active in NYC from the 1920s to the 1960s, well known for the jewelry all being handmade and hand wired, comparable to embroidery.
Her pieces were beloved by many in old Hollywood. During World War 2, Haskell (like many) was asked to limit the use of metals in her designs and instead began introducing wooden designs like the one I’m wearing.
Her pieces typically sell for a few hundred dollars.

Upstairs in an old French Quarter home feeling all those dreamy old timey vibes in this old timey 1950s silk smoking jacket.
Smoking jackets were originally designed in the 1850s as smoking rose in popularity and were intended as a “short robe of elevated stature” to protect one’s clothing from the ash and smell.
They became associated with luxury and style, as they were made of bold colors and prints, and desireable fabrics.

Off to protest the Vietnam War ✌🏻
Something I never realized from high school history class: the (anti-) Vietnam War aesthetic (peace signs, flower power, free love and the rise of The Yippies and Hippies) only occurred at the very end of the Vietnam War, and largely after the United States implemented the draft.
Prior to that time, the U.S. had been involved since just after World War II, fearing the spread of communism. The involvement stretched across 20 years, with the last few really defining the aesthetic we currently associate with the Vietnam War (ca. 1965 to its end in 1973).
Bandanas were just one small accessory used in hippie culture/aesthetic as an anti-war subculture fashion choice. Bandanas have continued to take on meanings to represent different sexual preferences, but more on that in another post.

I love any loungewear by a Kardashian but I love the original inspiration for the clothes more. These hundred-year-old soft pink pointelle pajamas are from the 20s - they’re soft and stretchy and sheer with the original labels.
It’s a long, fitted tank top with high waisted shorts that fit like modern day bike shorts and a tiny little hem.
I have multiple pairs and I’m keeping every one of them to use as my own pajamas.
I’m wearing them as I write this post 💋

A late 1800s floor length, velvet, chain stitched OddFellows robe. I’ve talked about the OddFellows in some of my previous posts but I’ve never seen robes quite like this one.
Doesn’t hurt that I took the photos in an apartment that also hasn't changed much since the robe was made.

HOT TAMALES!
todays history lesson is more French Quarter lore than classic history.
If you’ve spent any amount of time in the Quarter, you will undoubtedly run into the Tamale guy. He’s always got a cowboy hat on and a smile on his face while he drags a cooler full of tinfoil-wrapped homemade tamales behind him and inevitably pleasantly accosts you with the incredible smell of the food while yelling HOT TAMALES BABAYYYY!!!
If you buy one he will tell you how he will love you all his life.
I have had them and they are great.
But this shirt he had printed is even better.

1940s tulle skirts
Usually worn under a dress to create a more dramatic look, tool skirts became popular in the 1940s and 50s.
Tulle was originally created in the Victorian era, and became popularized for use in lingerie and wedding dresses. By the 1940s became a wardrobe staple used under dresses to fluff out the skirt.
You can see here I have a bunch – in nearly every color. Some have a stretchy material at the top to pull them on, and others have buttons and ribbons, which is indicative of the age of the garment.

This flag is a 48 star flag which was used for a period of just under 50 years for a period of time between 1912 in the 1960s when Hawaii was adopted, adding a new star.
The flag I’m using here is from World War II and is the same type of flag that was raised in Iwo Jima, and the same kind sent home to loved ones when soldiers were lost.
They’re not that hard to find, but ones in good shape can be. They usually made of heavy cotton and go for between 100 to 400 bucks.
(for my patriotic folk in this crowd, rest, assured, I took very careful care of this flag, when posing with it)

American beauty: Bettie Page playing cards edition
In case you live under a rock. Bettie Page is considered the Queen of Pinups. She reigned in the 1950s and in the 1980s with the rise of Olivia De Berardinis's watercolor pinup (aka cheesecake) art. Many of the more modern-day pinup art featured in Playboy from the 1980s on was from de Beradinis.
When talking about Bettie Page, you can't not talk about the two most famous photographers she worked with: Irving Klaw and Bunny Yeager.
I’ve mentioned Bunny Yeager before for her influence on the modern day bikini but as a refresh: she was a model-turned-photographer during the pinup era, capturing hundreds of iconic pinup images of Bettie Page (as well as other pinups). She also designed and sewed many of the outfits she and her models posed in!
We’ll save a lesson on Irving Klaw for another day. 💕
